Payment Methods List tracks 317 alternative and local payment methods across 62 countries, and 281 of them — 88.6% — are not card schemes. Digital wallets (118 methods) and real-time account-to-account rails (58 methods) together outnumber every card scheme in the dataset by more than three to one. In 51 of the 62 countries covered, a merchant faces more viable local non-card rails than card options at checkout.

Asia-Pacific carries the most methods per country: 107 rails across 18 markets, because wallet competition inside a single country (Indonesia, China, India) stacks several viable options on top of a national real-time rail. Europe is the inverse — 68 methods spread thinly across 23 countries, typically one dominant domestic rail per market. The practical consequence: an APAC launch is a per-method decision, a European launch is a per-country decision.

Wallets lead on brand count (118) but real-time A2A leads on reach per brand: 58 A2A rails cover more countries than the wallet set, because A2A is usually one national scheme per market (Pix, UPI, iDEAL, BLIK) while wallets compete several-to-a-country. Read the wallet number as integration surface and the A2A number as market coverage.

Depth is not the same as difficulty. The United States tops the list with 33 methods, but most are wallets layered over the same card credentials. Indonesia's 6 entries are genuinely distinct funding sources, which is why a single wallet integration there leaves real demand uncaptured. At the other end, 22 of 62 countries have exactly one tracked local method — a single point of failure for market entry.

This is a structural measure, not a volume measure: it says that in 51 markets the checkout a merchant has to build is mostly non-card, regardless of how the volume eventually splits. Treat it as an integration-scope number for market entry, and pair it with per-market volume data before forecasting revenue.

Settlement-time distributions, refund and chargeback support flags, instant-settlement coverage, PSP access counts and vertical restrictions (iGaming, forex, crypto, adult) are tracked per method but are not published as aggregates in this edition: the verified sample is currently 1 of 317 methods, and an average over that sample would misrepresent the dataset. They will appear in the next edition once verification passes the publication threshold. No figure on this page is estimated, modelled or extrapolated.

The Payment Methods List dataset tracks 317 payment methods across 62 countries as of July 31, 2026, of which 281 (89%) are non-card rails: digital wallets, real-time account-to-account transfers, BNPL, cash vouchers, direct debit and carrier billing. The true global population is larger, because dormant, single-bank and closed-loop schemes are excluded from the tracked set.
Asia-Pacific, with 45 tracked methods across 15 countries — 29.4% of the Payment Methods List dataset. Europe follows with 35 methods across 22 countries, then Latin America with 25 across 8. Asia-Pacific concentration comes from wallet-led markets such as Indonesia, China and India, where several competing wallets and a national real-time rail coexist in one country.
Digital wallets, at 118 of 317 tracked methods (37.2%), against 43 real-time account-to-account rails (13.6%) in the Payment Methods List dataset. Wallets are more numerous because markets support several competing private wallets, while real-time transfer rails are usually a single national scheme per country — so A2A covers more countries with fewer distinct brands.
In 51 of the 62 countries in the Payment Methods List dataset, non-card local methods outnumber card schemes; cards outnumber local rails in 5 countries and the two are tied in 6. This is a count of viable methods per market, not a volume share, so it describes the checkout options a merchant must support rather than where money actually moves.
Every method is added by hand after being verified against the scheme operator, a licensed provider or a PSP integration reference, then reviewed on a rolling cadence — the current pull is dated July 31, 2026. Retired brands such as Giropay are removed rather than left in place. Classification uses one type per method so counts by category never double-count a single rail.
