How the Boleto Bancário flow works

At checkout the merchant's PSP generates a Boleto — a barcoded document with a numeric line and an expiry (usually 1–3 business days).

The shopper pays the Boleto through their banking app (scan the barcode or paste the line), at an ATM, at a bank branch, or at a lottery agent (Casa Lotérica). Cash and account-debit are both accepted.

Clearing runs through the Brazilian banking system; the merchant's PSP typically receives confirmation the next business day (T+1), though some flows reconcile same-day.

Boleto has been substantially displaced by Pix for e-commerce (Pix is instant, always-on, and cheaper), but remains meaningful for higher-ticket, under-banked and B2B invoice flows.

Typical use cases

  • B2B invoicing and higher-ticket B2C purchases where card limits are constraining.
  • Serving under-banked or cash-preferring Brazilian consumers.
  • Legacy recurring bill flows where Boleto is the incumbent rail.

Consumer reach

Universally recognised in Brazil; every bank and payment institution supports Boleto payment.

Reach still meaningful but declining as Pix cannibalises the online use cases.

Who should accept Boleto Bancário

  • B2B and high-ticket B2C merchants in Brazil.
  • Merchants with a legacy Boleto customer base migrating gradually to Pix.
  • Cross-border merchants selling into Brazil where the buyer base still expects Boleto as a fallback.
