How the Alipay flow works

Alipay is a super-app wallet operated by Ant Group. Payments are funded from a linked Chinese bank account, balance, or Huabei (Ant's BNPL product). Consumers pay by scanning a merchant QR or by having their in-app QR scanned.

Online checkouts redirect the shopper into the Alipay app (or web) where they authorise with biometrics or PIN. In-app SDKs allow one-tap payment inside integrated third-party apps.

The merchant's PSP receives a real-time confirmation and settlement happens through Alipay's platform. Cross-border merchants transact via Alipay's international product, which handles CNY-to-settlement-currency conversion.

For overseas merchants, Alipay+ extends the same acceptance point to a family of Asian wallets (Kakao Pay, GCash, Touch 'n Go, TrueMoney, etc.).

Typical use cases

  • E-commerce and marketplaces selling to Chinese consumers, both domestically and cross-border.
  • Travel, luxury and duty-free targeting outbound Chinese travellers.
  • In-app and QR-based in-person payments across mainland China.
  • Any merchant already integrating Alipay+ to reach the broader Asian wallet base with one contract.

Consumer reach

Over a billion active users in mainland China; embedded in daily life for payments, transport, bill pay and services.

Very broad income and demographic reach; the dominant payment app alongside WeChat Pay.

Alipay+ extends the acceptance mark to hundreds of millions of additional wallet users across Asia.

Who should accept Alipay

  • Any merchant selling to Chinese consumers, in-country or cross-border.
  • Travel, hospitality, luxury and duty-free merchants with Chinese-tourist footfall.
  • Merchants expanding into Southeast Asia who can piggyback via Alipay+ instead of integrating each wallet.

Frequently asked questions about Alipay

What is Alipay?

Alipay is a digital wallet used in China, in the Asia-Pacific region. China's leading digital wallet, embedded in daily life for over a billion users. The profile on this page documents the checkout flow step by step, the use cases it fits, the consumer base that can pay with it, and the merchant types that should carry it. Last reviewed July 31, 2026 by Ale Aznar.

Which countries does Alipay cover?

Alipay is recorded against China in the Asia-Pacific region, which is the market where its consumer reach is meaningful for merchants. Cross-border acceptance depends on the acquirer or merchant-of-record you use rather than on the rail itself. The China country hub lists every other alternative and local method tracked for that market alongside Alipay.

What does Alipay cost a merchant?

Pricing for Alipay is not a single published number: it moves with monthly volume, vertical, entity type and whether you connect through a direct acquirer or an aggregator. Effective pricing bands per provider, plus the fixed-fee and FX components that sit alongside the headline rate, are part of the founding-partner dataset rather than this public China profile.

Which PSPs and aggregators give access to Alipay?

Access to Alipay runs either through an acquirer with a direct rail connection or through an aggregator reselling a partner's connection, and the two differ in reliability and reporting. The list of providers processing Alipay in China today, whether each is direct or resold, and where onboarding is currently restricted sits in the founding-partner PSP coverage matrix.

Is Alipay available for E-commerce and marketplaces selling to Chinese consumers, both domestically and cross-border?

Yes. That is one of the documented use cases for Alipay in China: E-commerce and marketplaces selling to Chinese consumers, both domestically and cross-border. Vertical eligibility is ultimately set by the provider you onboard with, not by the rail, so regulated categories such as gambling, crypto and adult content are commonly excluded even where the digital wallet itself supports the flow. Confirm the restriction list with your acquirer.

What are the settlement time and currency for Alipay?

Alipay is a digital wallet, so the payer-side confirmation and the merchant-side payout are separate events with different timing. Settlement windows, cut-off behaviour outside scheme hours, the payout currency, and the realistic timeline to sweep funds out of China are documented in the operational section of this profile, available to Payment Methods List founding partners.
